Paris: Inter Miami’s CF (centre forward) Argentine footballer, Lionel Messi, received his 8th Ballon d’Or award during the 2023 Ballon d’Or France Football award ceremony at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. The 36-year-old football legend played a pivotal role in leading Argentina to victory in the World Cup held in Qatar.
Speaking after accepting the award in Paris, Messi expressed his deep appreciation for this honour, saying, “The last one I won was also thanks to what we achieved with the Argentine national team in the Copa America in 2021, but this one is much more special because it comes after we won the World Cup.” He went on to describe the World Cup as the most coveted trophy in the sport, and he felt that it was a dream come true not only for himself but also for his teammates and his country.
In a tribute, Messi dedicated the Ballon d’Or trophy to the late Argentine football legend, Diego Maradona, whose 63rd birthday would have been celebrated on that day.
