Kolkata: Gautam Gambhir, who recently stepped down as the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants, is making a comeback as the mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The cricket star took to social media to share the news with fans and clarify his return.
Gambhir, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to IPL victory twice as captain, left the team in 2017. In a note shared on social media, he expressed his excitement about returning to KKR, stating, “I am not an emotional person and not many things move me. But this is different. This is back to where it all started. Today, there is a lump in my throat and fire in my heart as I think about slipping into that purple and gold jersey once again. I am not only coming to KKR but I am coming back to the city of joy. I am back. I am hungry. I am number 23. Ami KKR”
Team owner Shahrukh Khan welcomed Gambhir’s return, saying, “Gautam has always been part of the family and this is our Captain coming back home in a different avatar as a “Mentor”. He was sorely missed and now we all look forward to Chandu Sir and Gautam in instilling the never-say-die spirit and of sportsmanship they stand for, in creating magic with Team KKR.”
KKR had a challenging season last year, finishing seventh in the points table under the leadership of Nitish Rana. With Gambhir back in the mentor’s role, fans are hopeful for a revitalised performance from the team in the upcoming IPL season.
