Riyadh: In a recent match against Iranian club Persepolis FC in the Asian Champions League at Riyadh’s Al-Awwal Park Stadium, football legend Cristiano Ronaldo showcased exemplary sportsmanship by refusing a penalty awarded for a foul in the second minute of the match.
The incident unfolded when Ronaldo was brought down by a Persepolis player, prompting Al Nassr players to argue for a penalty. Despite the referee’s initial decision to award the penalty, Ronaldo, demonstrating remarkable sportsmanship, insisted that there was no foul and urged against the penalty.
Although the opposing team lodged an appeal against the penalty, the referee stood firm on the initial decision. However, after a careful VAR (video assistant referee) check, the referee withdrew the penalty, acknowledging Ronaldo’s fair play. Notably, the players of Persepolis also commended Ronaldo for his honesty on the field.
