Chennai: The Madras High Court has sentenced IPS officer Sampath Kumar to 15 days in prison for contempt of court, following a petition filed by former Indian cricket team captain M. S Dhoni. The contempt of court charge stems from Kumar’s earlier allegations against Dhoni, accusing him of involvement in betting during the 2013 IPL season. Dhoni filed a defamation case in the Chennai HC against Zee Media were Kumar and others were also involved.
The backdrop of this legal saga dates back to 2013, when allegations of match-fixing cast a shadow over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) during the IPL season 6. Accusations were levelled against Chennai Super Kings owner Gurunath Meiyappan, and notable players such as Ankeet Chavan, Ajit Chandila, and Keralite star S. Sreesanth faced bans from cricket.
As a consequence of the controversy, both CSK and RR were suspended from the IPL for two years. Dhoni, in response to allegations, filed a defamation case against Zee Media, Sampath Kumar, and others involved in dragging his name into the incident. Dhoni was represented by PR Raman in the legal proceedings. Sampath Kumar now has the opportunity to appeal within the specified time frame as the legal saga continues.
