Dubai: Australian captain Pat Cummins becomes the highest-paid player in IPL history was short-lived, as his fellow countryman took the spotlight shortly after. In a heated bidding war between Gujarat and Kolkata, King Khan’s Kolkata secured star player Mitchell Starc for a record-breaking sum of Rs. 24.75 crore. Initially, Mumbai and Delhi were in contention for the talented player, but they withdrew after the bid surpassed crores.
Starc, who had previously played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2014–2015 season, had been absent from the IPL for several years. However, his name resurfaced in the mini-auction ahead of the 2024 season.
In a surprising turn of events, Cummins found a new home with Sunrisers Hyderabad, who acquired him for Rs 20.50 crore. Notably, this amount places him among the elite group of players who have crossed the Rs. 16-crore mark in IPL auctions, including Cameron Green (17.50 crores), Ben Stokes (16.25 crores), Chris Morris (16.25 crores), Nicholas Pooran (16 crores), and Yuvraj Singh (16 crores).
