Centurion: Abhimanyu Easwaran has been called upon to replace Ruturaj Gaikwad in the Indian top-order for the upcoming two-test series against South Africa. Gaikwad sustained a right ring finger injury while fielding in the second one-day international against South Africa in Gqeberha.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a statement confirming Gaikwad’s unavailability for the remainder of the tour following expert consultations and scans. Although Gaikwad, aged 26, has played six one-day internationals and 19 T20 internationals, he has yet to make his Test debut.
Abhimanyu Easwaran, the captain of the Bharat ‘A’ squad currently in South Africa, has been entrusted with the role of filling Gaikwad’s spot. Yashasvi Jaiswal is anticipated to open skipper Rohit Sharma as the opening duo in the Test series which is set to kick off in Centurion on Tuesday. The first Test match between Bharat and South Africa is scheduled to take place from December 26 to 30 at the Super Sport Park in Centurion.
