Dubai: Cricket’s governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), has implemented significant rule changes effective December 12, 2023. One notable modification pertains to caught-behind appeals during stumping situations. Teams are now required to use a separate Decision Review System (DRS) option for caught-behind appeals after a stumping, preventing the misuse of the team’s DRS.
Earlier, Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey drew attention by frequently opting for a review for caught-behind after a stumping without utilising the team’s DRS option in a recent series against Bharat. The new rule restricts stumping reviews to side-on camera images, focusing solely on stumping aspects and not considering snick inspections.
“The change confines a stumping review to only check for stumped, therefore preventing the fielding team from receiving a free review for other modes of dismissal (i.e., caught behind) without choosing a player review,” states the ICC’s updated amendment.
The ICC has also introduced clarity in the concussion replacement rule. According to the new guidelines, a substitute player will be ineligible to bowl if the replaced player was suspended from bowling during the concussion incident. Additionally, the on-field injury assessment and treatment time have been limited to four minutes.
Alongside these changes, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to maintain the ‘Dead Ball’ and two bouncers per over rules. These rules were initially introduced during last year’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy and will continue to be in effect in the upcoming Ranji Trophy starting today.
