Thiruvananthapuram: Indian cricketer Shubman Gill is set to be honoured with the ‘Cricketer of the Year’ award at the upcoming Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) awards. The ceremony, taking place in Hyderabad, precedes the 1st Test between Bharat and England on Thursday, where members of both teams will be in attendance.
Gill, the promising Indian opener, had an outstanding season in 2023. Achieving the fastest 2000-run milestone in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and securing five centuries in the 50-over format, he also claimed the top spot in the ICC ODI batting rankings, dethroning Babar Azam. Gill joins the elite club of Indian batters, including Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli, who have previously held the No. 1 position in the ICC ODI rankings.
The BCCI awards, taking place for the first time since 2019, will also recognise former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’. Shastri, who played 80 Tests and 150 ODIs for Bharat, served as Team Bharat’s director in 2014 and later as head coach.
Under his guidance, Bharat achieved historic victories, including being the first Asian side to win a Test series in Australia. Shastri’s coaching tenure also saw Bharat compete in the ICC World Cup 2019 semi-final and the inaugural ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand in 2021.
