Hyderabad: Mohammed Shami was honoured with the esteemed ‘Polly Umrigar Award’ for the Cricketer of the Year title across the years 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, and 2023 in the ‘Naman Awards’ ceremony conducted by BCCI in Hyderabad. Additionally, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, and Shubman Gill were also recipients of awards during the ceremony.
Despite facing injuries during his international games, Mohammed Shami, known for his prowess in the bowling department, was recognised for his outstanding performance in the 2019–20 season. Shami took an impressive 77 wickets in 30 matches at an average of 19.81. Shami expressed his dedication, stating, “I enjoy playing with the team. I am ready to play whenever the team asks.”
Shubman Gill, the rising star of Indian cricket, claimed the ‘Cricketer of the Year Award ‘for 2023, showcasing his stellar performances on the international stage. Gill, who impressed with five centuries, achieved the distinction of being the fastest batsman to reach 2000 runs in ODIs last year. His exceptional form contributed significantly to Bharat’s success.
The ceremony also witnessed the presentation of the Colonel CK Naidu Lifetime Achievement Award to former Indian cricketers Ravi Shastri and Farokh Engineer. BCCI President Roger Binny and Secretary Jai Shah had the honour of presenting these awards to the cricket legends.
Meanwhile, the Madhavrao Scindia Award for outstanding performance in domestic cricket was conferred upon Jaydev Unadkat, Mayank Agarwal, and Sarfaraz Khan.
