Kenya: Kelvin Kiptum, the world record holder in the marathon, passed away in a car accident along with his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, on Sunday night, as confirmed by Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge.
Kiptum, aged 24, made history by breaking the men’s marathon record in Chicago on October 8, 2023, completing the race in an astounding time of two hours and 35 seconds.
Kiptum surpassed the previous world record set by two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge in Berlin in 2022 by slashing off 34 seconds and becoming the first man to complete the marathon in less than two hours and one minute. He was set to participate in the Rotterdam Marathon on April 14.
