New Delhi: West Bengal fast bowler Akash Deep, aged 27, is likely to make his Test debut during the fourth Test against England in Ranchi on Friday. He is expected to replace Jasprit Bumrah, who has been released for the game to manage his workload.
Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar stands as the two pace options to partner Mohammed Siraj for the upcoming Test match against England. However, sources suggest that the team management and selectors are inclined towards selecting Akash Deep, impressed by his recent performances.
Akash showcased his prowess by picking up 10 wickets from two red-ball games for Bharat A team against England Lions in Ahmedabad. Additionally, his track record in First-Class cricket with 104 wickets from 30 games at an average of 23.58 further bolsters his chances.
Meanwhile, Mukesh Kumar’s performance in the second Test in Vizag was deemed less impactful, with only one wicket to his name in 12 overs bowled on a flat track.
In an official press release, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah announced Bumrah’s release for the fourth Test, stating that the decision was taken keeping in mind the duration of the series and the amount of cricket he has played in recent times.
