Mumbai: Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav has opened up about the influence of former captain and wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni had on his career. In an interview with the Indian Express, Yadav expressed gratitude towards Dhoni, highlighting his understanding of match situations and intelligent decision-making on the field.
Speaking to the media, Kuldeep said that Dhoni is one of the few captains who understands the match situation on the ground and makes intelligent moves. Kuldeep emphasised Dhoni’s knack for nurturing young talents like him. Kuldeep revealed that Dhoni’s retirement had a notable impact on his performance, leading to a decline in his form and an extended absence from the national team.
Kuldeep said that he wanted Dhoni to play a bit more because if Dhoni is staying behind the wickets, it is very easy for him to bowl. Yadav remarked, underscoring the ease and confidence Dhoni instilled in the bowling unit. Yadav admitted to struggling after Dhoni’s retirement, feeling the weight of increased responsibility on his shoulders.
Reflecting on his partnership with fellow spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep noted the invaluable guidance and support provided by Dhoni, both on and off the field. Kuldeep mentioned that he and Chahal had a lot of fun when Dhoni was behind the wickets. Dhoni would offer a lot of advice, and Kuldeep didn’t have to think too much about bowling. Kuldeep recalled, highlighting Dhoni’s ability to effortlessly manage the bowling unit and field placements according to the match situations.
Kuldeep and Dhoni’s last appearance together was during 2019 ODI World Cup match against Sri Lanka in Leeds. Despite Dhoni announcing his international retirement on August 15, 2020, Dhoni continued to showcase his talent in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Under his captaincy, CSK secured their fourth and fifth titles in 2021 and 2023, respectively. As he gears up for his 17th IPL season, the 42 years old, stands as one of the tournament’s oldest players. He will lead CSK in the IPL 2024 opener against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai on March 22.
