Roseau: As India prepares for their upcoming tour of the West Indies, Captain Rohit Sharma has addressed the team’s inability to clinch ICC titles in recent years. Following their disappointing loss to Australia in the World Test Championship 2023 final, questions have been raised regarding India’s failure to secure an ICC trophy since 2013.
Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, India has missed out on an ICC title not once, but twice. Prior to the World Test Championship final, they suffered a defeat in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022, being knocked out of the tournament by eventual champions England after a 10-wicket loss.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Test series against the West Indies, Rohit Sharma expressed his desire for all players to be available and free from injury concerns. He acknowledged that the Indian team has played excellent cricket but has fallen short of victory in key moments. The captain emphasised the need for continued improvement and perseverance, along with the element of luck.
“I feel that as long as you keep ticking the boxes, keep playing good cricket, things will fall into place. Overall, over the years, we have done a lot of good things. It’s just that sometimes you want luck to be on your side as well,” Rohit Sharma said.
Highlighting the team’s success in various series over the past five to six years, Rohit Sharma acknowledged the importance of winning championships. India’s last ICC title came in 2013, when MS Dhoni led the team to victory in the Champions Trophy. As the ODI World Cup approaches, India has another opportunity to break the curse and secure their third title in the tournament. Having won the 50-over World Cup in 2011 on home soil, the Men in Blue will be eager to replicate their success in the upcoming edition.
Before the World Cup, the Indian team will face the West Indies in two Tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is. Rohit Sharma acknowledged the challenges of each series, highlighting the strength of the West Indies team at home. He expressed hope that the Indian team would accept the challenge and perform well on the forthcoming tour.
As India aims to reclaim ICC titles and break their drought in major tournaments, Rohit Sharma’s leadership will play a crucial role in guiding the team’s efforts. With a blend of experienced players and promising newcomers, the Men in Blue will be eager to make their mark and bring home silverware in the upcoming years.
