New Delhi: In a bid to test the fitness and form of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, India will send a second-string squad for the upcoming T20I series in Ireland. The series, set to take place in Malahide, will provide a crucial opportunity for Bumrah to make a comeback after his extensive rehabilitation at the NCA (National Cricket Academy) post-surgery to treat his lower back stress fracture. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed on Thursday that Bumrah will be tested during the three-match series.
As part of his rehabilitation process, Jasprit Bumrah is expected to participate in a couple of warm-up games, and a final decision on his inclusion will be taken based on his performance and fitness assessment. His return to the national team will be closely monitored, considering his pivotal role in India’s bowling attack.
Speaking on the team selection, Jay Shah emphasised the importance of consistency in selections, particularly with the World Cup on the horizon. Apart from Bumrah, none of the senior players who are bound for the World Cup will be selected for the Ireland series, including T20 captain Hardik Pandya. The focus will be on giving opportunities to the young and upcoming players, allowing them to gain exposure and showcase their talent at the international level.
The T20I series against Ireland is scheduled to begin shortly after the conclusion of the five-match T20I series against the West Indies in the United States. With such a tight schedule, managing the player workload and ensuring their fitness will be a key challenge for the Indian team management.
Jay Shah also emphasised the BCCI’s responsibility towards other cricket boards and the need to support them during these challenging times. International cricket is happening at a hectic pace, and injuries are bound to occur. To ensure the survival and well-being of other cricket boards, the BCCI will continue to tour different countries and engage in bilateral series.
In another significant announcement, Jay Shah highlighted the importance of domestic cricket for senior players not included in the Indian team. He stressed that players like Cheteshwar Pujara and Suryakumar Yadav recently participating in the Duleep Trophy showcase the BCCI’s commitment to giving opportunities to players at various levels. Shah asserted that players who are not part of the Indian team and not at the NCA will be required to play domestic cricket, contributing to their development and maintaining their match fitness.
