Bridgetown: Despite facing a six-wicket defeat against the West Indies in the second ODI match in Barbados on Sunday, Indian coach Rahul Dravid remains steadfast in his focus on the bigger picture: the upcoming World Cup and Asia Cup. Dravid revealed that the team is currently experimenting with different players in the series against the West Indies due to injuries, with an eye on building a strong squad for the crucial tournaments.
Addressing the media after the match, Dravid emphasised the importance of trying out players for backup positions given the injury concerns within the team. He mentioned that some players are currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), and with limited time left before the World Cup and Asia Cup, the coaching staff is keen on providing opportunities to other talents in case they are needed in the future.
Dravid acknowledged the challenge of selecting the right Playing XI, especially in series like the one against the West Indies with only a few matches remaining before the major tournaments. He highlighted that the team’s objective is to consider the bigger picture and not focus on individual games or series.
When questioned about criticism regarding the team’s selection for the Playing XI, Dravid stated that the opinions of others do not concern them. He firmly believes in giving chances to young and talented players from the country and allowing them to prove themselves on the international stage. Dravid expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance in the second ODI, particularly on a tricky wicket, where they fell short of posting a competitive total.
Regarding individual players, Dravid praised Surya Kumar Yadav’s talent but acknowledged that the batsman is still adapting to the ODI format. Despite his exceptional performances in T20 cricket, Yadav’s performances in ODIs have not yet reached the same standards. Dravid reiterated the team’s commitment to providing Yadav with ample opportunities to grow and prove himself in the one-day format.
On the other hand, Dravid commended Ishan Kishan for making the most of the opportunities he has received so far, showing promise and potential as a young player.
