According to a report , the Kerala cricket team is set to welcome a new leader as former Indian off-spinner M. Venkataramana takes over the reins as head coach, succeeding Tinu Yohannan. With a distinguished cricketing career and coaching experience under his belt, Venkataramana is poised to guide the Kerala team through the upcoming domestic season.
A veteran of the game, the 57-year-old Venkataramana made his mark in the cricket arena through his impressive performances. Representing Tamil Nadu, he featured in 75 first-class matches and showcased his mettle by claiming 247 wickets. His debut Ranji season in 1987–88 remains etched in memory, as he emerged triumphant with 35 wickets against Railways at Chepauk, contributing to Tamil Nadu’s second title victory.
Venkataramana’s journey also included international recognition, as he earned a call-up to the Indian team in 1988. His dedication and skills earned him a place in a one-day international and a lone Test match in 1988 and 1989, respectively.
The new head coach brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience, bolstered by a level 3 coaching certificate from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). His coaching journey has seen diverse roles, including a stint as the head coach of the Singapore national team from 2006 to 2011. Additionally, he held the position of head coach for Tamil Nadu during the past couple of seasons (2021–23), further enriching his coaching portfolio.
As the cricketing community gears up for the upcoming domestic season, slated to commence on October 16 with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, anticipation is building for the cricketing spectacle that lies ahead. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will be followed by the highly regarded Vijay Hazare Trophy and the prestigious Ranji Trophy, creating an engaging and competitive cricket calendar.
