Kolkata: Team India has faced a significant setback as star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has withdrawn from further participation at World Cup due to an ankle injury sustained while bowling in a match against Bangladesh in Pune.
The 30-year-old, Hardik Pandya, initially injured his left ankle during the World Cup match against Bangladesh and has been unable to recover in time to continue in the tournament, according to a press release from the International Cricket Council (ICC).
In Pandya’s absence, his place in the Indian squad will be taken by Prasidh Krishna, a fast bowler with limited international experience. Krishna was approved by the tournament’s Event Technical Committee on Saturday to join the playing group.
Prasidh Krishna, who has made just 19 white-ball appearances for India, was last seen at the international level taking a wicket of David Warner and finishing with figures of 1/45 from nine overs in a match against Australia just before the World Cup.
Prasidh Krishna’s inclusion in the squad makes him eligible for the vital World Cup match against South Africa, which is set to take place on Sunday.
Currently, India and South Africa occupy the top two positions on the World Cup standings, and the winner of Sunday’s match in Kolkata will be in a favorable position to finish the group stage of the tournament in first place.
