Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has presented a new proposal to captain Rohit Sharma, who is contemplating a break from white-ball cricket. The request is for Rohit Sharma to lead Bharat in the upcoming T20 international series during the South Africa tour, commencing on December 10. This development coincides with Hardik Pandya’s absence from the tournament due to an ankle injury sustained during the 2023 ODI World Cup tournament.
If Pandya is unable to join the team, Suryakumar Yadav, who recently assumed the role of captain for Bharat in the T20 series against Australia, emerges as a potential candidate to lead the T20 squad on the South Africa tour. The series, comprising eight matches—three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests—is set to kick off on December 10.
Earlier reports suggested that Virat Kohli had communicated with BCCI along with Rohit, expressing his desire for a break from white-ball cricket. Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, key figures in Bharat’s batting lineup, have refrained from T20 cricket since the T20 World Cup in 2022.
