Wellington: According to reports, New Zealand cricket opener Devon Conway is likely to miss the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season as he is set to be sidelined for a minimum of eight weeks due to a thumb injury sustained during the T20I series against Australia last month.
The 32-year-old Conway is scheduled to undergo surgery on his left thumb, which was injured during the second T20I in Auckland on February 23. Following a missed appearance in the first Test, Conway’s medical assessment has necessitated surgical intervention.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said in a media interaction that Devon Conway has a small fracture in the joint of his thumb. Consequently, he will undergo surgery this week, with hopes that he will recover within an eight-week period.
Conway, who was acquired by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for a base price of Rs 1 crore in the 2022 auction, boasts an impressive IPL record, amassing 924 runs in 23 matches at an average of 46.12 with a strike rate of 141.28. New Zealand Cricket issued a statement confirming the decision to proceed with surgery for Conway, with an anticipated recovery timeline of at least eight weeks.
The IPL is slated to commence on March 22, with CSK, the defending champions, facing Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
