Dharamshala: R. Ashwin’s goal was to become a batsman at the beginning of his career. But something else awaited the hard-working cricket genius. As he is going to play his 100th Test match in Dharamshala today, Ashwin engraves his name on the list of legends that will never fade away. Ashwin is one of the few spinners who can remain active in cricket even at the age of 37.
In the backdrop of the Bharat-England 5th and final Test at HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala, history unfolds as R. Ashwin and England star Jonny Bairstow mark their 100th Test match together today. This rare occurrence marks only the fourth instance in cricket history where two players share the milestone of 100 Test matches in the same day.
Ashwin, representing Tamil Nadu, not only becomes the 14th Indian player to reach this milestone but also the oldest Indian cricket player to achieve the feat at the age of 37. He played his Test debut in Delhi in 2011 against the West Indies.
Ashwin’s remarkable journey includes several milestones, including securing 500 Test wickets during the Rajkot Test, making him only the second Indian bowler after Anil Kumble to achieve this remarkable milestone. Furthermore, Ashwin stands as the first Indian cricket player to take 200 wickets and score 1000 runs against England.
Ashwin now joins the elite club along with Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Virat Kohli, who played 100 Test matches.
