Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveils the Meta Quest 3, a new virtual reality headset for consumers. This upgraded headset introduces high-resolution colour mixed reality, a significant improvement over the black-and-white pass-through feature of the Meta Quest 2, released in 2020.
The Quest 3 is slated to be available in all countries where the Meta Quest is currently supported starting this autumn. The base model, with 128GB of storage, will be priced at $499.99, and an additional storage option will be offered for users seeking extra space.
According to Meta, the Quest 3 combines a display with the highest resolution available and pancake optics, resulting in an enhanced visual experience. To handle the increased pixel count, it will be the first headset to feature a next-generation Snapdragon chipset developed in collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies.
With a 40% slimmer optic profile compared to its predecessor, the Quest 3 boasts a sleeker and more comfortable design. Users will have the option to upgrade to the Meta Quest Touch Pro Controllers for a premium VR experience. Furthermore, the headset will support hand tracking out of the box, enabling users to interact with virtual objects using their hands alone thanks to Direct Touch technology.
The Quest 3 will be compatible with the extensive catalogue of over 500 VR games, apps, and experiences available for the Quest 2. Additionally, Meta has announced the imminent release of several exciting new VR and mixed reality titles for users to enjoy.
The new unveiling of Meta’s Quest 3 VR comes just in time before Apple is expected to launch their AR/VR headsets at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which is taking place from June 5–9, 2023.
