WhatsApp, Meta’s instant messaging network, is witnessing an increase in fraudsters and hackers misusing its user base in India. Scammers have recently been distributing a widespread fake message on WhatsApp, targeting unsuspecting users. The bogus message includes a link that purports to give access to a new version of WhatsApp dubbed ‘Pink WhatsApp,’ which has an improved interface and exciting new features.
In response to this emerging threat, the Mumbai Police has released public advisory warning individuals about the ‘Pink WhatsApp’ hoax. The advisory emphasises the importance of refraining from clicking on the link or downloading the associated application. Authorities have alerted the public that this deceptive message falsely promises an updated WhatsApp logo colour and improved functionalities, while the actual intention is to execute a phishing attack.
Clicking on the provided link can have severe consequences, potentially compromising the user’s device and leading to unauthorised access by scammers who may steal sensitive information. To safeguard against the Pink WhatsApp scam, the Mumbai Police has shared some guidelines for WhatsApp users:
· If the fake app has been downloaded, it should be immediately uninstalled by going to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp (pink logo) and selecting the uninstall option.
· Install or update apps solely from the official Google Play Store or iOS App Store, or from trusted websites.
· Refrain from clicking or forwarding any links and messages to others without proper authentication or verification.
By adhering to these precautions, users can reduce the risk of falling victim to the Pink WhatsApp scam and protect their personal information and devices from malicious actors.
