Los Angeles: In a recent post on Twitter, Executive Chair Elon Musk announced that the platform will be implementing limitations on the number of tweets accounts can read each day. The aim is to discourage excessive data scraping and system manipulation. Initially, verified accounts were restricted to reading 6,000 posts daily, while unverified accounts were limited to 600 posts. New unverified accounts faced an even lower cap of 300 posts per day.
Elon Musk tweeted, “To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we’ve applied the following temporary limits: verified accounts are limited to reading 6,000 posts per day, unverified accounts to 600 posts per day, and new unverified accounts to 300 posts per day.” However, during a later announcement, Musk revealed that these temporary limits had been increased to 10,000 posts per day for verified users, 1,000 posts per day for unverified users, and 500 posts per day for new unverified users. Unfortunately, he did not provide additional details regarding this update.
Coincidentally, on the same day, Twitter users from various countries reported difficulties accessing the micro blogging website, sparking speculation about a global outage.
This move comes as a response to the concerns raised by Musk, who highlighted that numerous organisations were aggressively scraping data from Twitter, which negatively impacted the user experience. Furthermore, Musk expressed his dissatisfaction with artificial intelligence firms like OpenAI, the owner of ChatGPT, for utilising Twitter’s data to train their large language models.
Twitter has been actively taking steps to regain the trust of advertisers who left the platform during Musk’s ownership. Additionally, the company aims to boost subscription revenue through its Twitter Blue program, which includes verification check marks as a notable feature.
