Thiruvananthapuram: Apple is rumoured to unveil a significant update at this year’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) with the launch of iOS 18 for iPhones. According to a report, Apple is poised to make a notable stride into the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI, which marks a departure from its traditional approach.
Rumours suggest that iOS 18 will focus on improving Siri using Apple’s special Large Language Models (LLMs), potentially named AppleGPT. While Google and Samsung have embraced AI in their phones, Apple has taken a careful approach, working quietly to enhance its AI technology.
The upcoming Siri update will harness the capabilities of generative AI. Igor Jablokov, CEO of AI Pryon and founder of Yap, mentioned, “they tend to hang back and wait until there is a confluence of technology, and they can offer one of the finest representations of that technology.”
Furthermore, the report hints at Apple dropping clues about its AI ambitions. Analyst Jeff Pu suggests that generative AI will start making its way to iPhones and iPads in late 2024. In line with this initiative, Apple is reportedly constructing approximately 100 AI servers this year, signalling a move towards cloud-based AI. Additionally, Apple is said to be working on developing on-device AI technology referred to as ‘edge AI.’
