Thiruvananthapuram: Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, announced on Tuesday its intention to begin labeling AI-generated images across all its social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and Threads, in the coming months. While Meta already applies the ‘Imagined with AI’ labels to images generated using its Meta AI feature, the company now aims to extend this labelling to AI-generated images from other major industry players like Google and OpenAI.
Meta’s president of global affairs, Nick Clegg, explained in a blog post why this new feature is important. He said, “As it becomes harder to tell apart human and computer-generated content, people want to know if what they’re seeing is made by AI. That’s why we use ‘Imagined with AI’ labels on lifelike images created with our Meta AI technology.”
Clegg further emphasised the significance of collaborating with industry partners to establish common technical standards for identifying AI-generated content. This collaboration aims to enable the detection of signals indicating AI-generated images, facilitating the labeling of such content posted by users on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
