Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala faces scrutiny as it reportedly fails to adhere to central regulations on vehicle pollution. The state Motor Vehicle Department has allegedly neglected to enforce the pollution test standards for petrol vehicles in line with central norms.
Since 2019, the central government has mandated the Lambda test for pollution assessment of petrol vehicles falling under Bharat Stage (BS) 4 and 6 categories. However, the state Motor Vehicle Department has neglected to implement this directive, citing issues such as the need for modernization of inspection centers and technical challenges. Despite court orders to adopt the new method, similar to other states and Union Territories, Kerala’s government has not taken any action in this regard.
The latest directives underscore the central government’s commitment to enhancing the transportation system by mitigating air pollution. Proper fuel combustion in petrol vehicles is crucial for reducing exhaust emissions. The Lambda test determines emission levels by considering factors such as engine speed (Revolutions Per Minute-RPM) during testing.
