Thiruvananthapuram: Shashi Tharoor, UDF candidate from Thiruvananthapuram, openly admits Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) support to the Congress. Shashi Tharoor said that SDPI is supporting Congress not only in Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency but also in the other 19 Lok Sabha constituencies of Kerala. The UDF candidate was responding to a media query about SDPI support to Congress after submitting his nomination papers.

Shashi Tharoor also said that BJP is the main rival in Thiruvananthapuram constituency for Congress and there is no triangular contest happening here. He said that this is what he understood during his visits to different areas of the constituency for election campaigning.

Shashi Tharoor’s open statement comes at a time when Congress leaders are expressing different opinions about the SDPI-UDF relationship. SDPI is the political face of banned terrorist organization Popular Front of India (PFI). The Congress’s stance of allying with fundamentalists for votes has led to great debates. It is reported that the Congress-SDPI relationship in Kerala is with the knowledge of the national leaders of Congress. In constituencies including Wayanad where Rahul Gandhi is contesting, the SDPI candidate won more than 5,000 votes last time.
