Thrissur: Actor and Member of Parliament Suresh Gopi has intervened for the release of Abdul Rahim, a Malayali who has been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia. Speaking to Janam TV, Suresh Gopi revealed that he had raised the issue of the death penalty with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and had also engaged in discussions with the Omani ambassador.

Despite encountering numerous technical challenges, there remains optimism regarding Abdul Rahim’s eventual release, particularly due to the strengthening of diplomatic ties between the two nations. Suresh Gopi expressed confidence in the potential for Prime Minister Modi’s intervention, given the positive rapport between the Saudi ruler and the Indian Prime Minister.

Abdul Rahim, a native of Farook, Kozhikode,  went to work as a driver in Riyadh 18 years ago. However, his life took a turn when he discovered that his duties extended beyond driving to include caring for a 15-year-old differently-abled boy who relied on life-support machines after an accident.

Remembering the troubles at home, Abdul Rahim was prepared to fulfil his duties. However, during one journey with the child, the breathing apparatus attached to his neck was lost, causing the child to faint and subsequently die. As a result of this incident, Abdul Rahim was sentenced to death under Saudi law for murder. Rs. 34 crore is required for his release.
