New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind appointed ex-cabinet minister Arif Mohammad Khan as the Governor of Kerala on Sunday.
Khan quit the Indian National Congress due to differences over the passage of Muslim Personal Law Bill which was piloted by Rajiv Gandhi in the Lok Sabha. He has always supported reformation within Muslims.
During Rajiv Gandhi Congress government Khan resigned from the position of Minister of state after protesting against Gandhi’s stand on Shah Bano case in 1986. He also opposed triple talaq and said that it should be punishable with 3 years in jail. He is actively involved in policymaking and Islam reformation.
Khan will take over the constitutional post by replacing Justice (Retd.) Palanisamy Sathasivam.
The President has also appointed four other governors for the state of Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh and Telangana.
Kalraj Mishra, governor of Himachal Pradesh is transferred and appointed as Governor of Rajasthan, Bhagat Singh Koshyari as Governor of Maharashtra, Banduru Dattatraya as Governor of Himachal Pradesh and Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan as Governor of Telangana.
