New Delhi: Amit Shah today said that the coming 2021 census will be conducted through a mobile phone application eschewing the traditional pen and paper. The government is earmarking Rs. 12,000 crore for the project and will be conducted in 16 languages of the country.

Amit Shah was speaking after laying the foundation stone of a new building for the Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner in New Delhi.

The Home Minister said, “The process of a ‘Pen-Paper Census’ would be transformed to a ‘Digital Census’ in the 2021 Census exercise by using the latest technology.”

Amit Shah added, “Census data will be collected through a mobile app. This is for the first time that the mobile app will be used for the census exercise. India will be moving from the pen and paper census to digital data, which will be a big revolution in the country’s census exercise.”

He also said that 130 crores of Indians must be aware of the census as it will enable the government for long term planning of growth and development.

The minister reminded that the previous census in 2011 enabled the Modi government to plan 22 welfare schemes.
