New Delhi: The government in a bid to stop the rising price of onions have stopped the export of the vegetable with immediate effect. The Ministry of Commerce, today, amended the policy of onion.

The notification dated 29 September, 2019 states, “In exercise of powers conferred by “Section 3 of the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992, as amended, read with paragraph 1.02 and 2.01 of the Foreign Trade Policy, 2015-2020, the Central Government hereby makes the following amendment with immediate effect on the export policy of Onions.”

“Export policy of onion for the item description at Serial Number 51 & 52 of Chapter 7 of Schedule 2 of (ITC) (HS) classification of Export & Import Items is amended from free to prohibited till further orders.”

The price rise of onions is a direct fallout from the heavy rainfall witnessed in the major onion producing states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat Rajasthan, Bihar etc. These states together produce around 90% of the total onions produced in the country.

The Central Government also offloaded 50,000 tons of buffer stocks of onion across the country to bring relief to consumers.
