India to give assistance to Bangladesh in its efforts to shelter Rohingyas

New Delhi: India said that it will supply a fifth tranche of humanitarian assistance to help Bangladesh’s effort to shelter Rohingyas in temporary camps in Cox’s Bazar in that county.

A joint statement released after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina said that the assistance will include tents, relief and rescue materials as well as 1000 sewing machines for skill development of forcibly displaced women from Myanmar.

In the statement it said, “The two Prime Ministers agreed on the need to expedite safe, speedy and sustainable repatriation of the displaced persons to their homes in the Rakhine state of Myanmar. they agreed on the need for greater efforts to be made to facilitate their return, including by improving security and socio-economic conditions i the Rakhine State of Myanmar.”

The statement also said that India has completed a project to build 250 houses in Rakhine and is now preparing to implement a new set of socio-economic development projects in the area.

Modi is said to have appreciated Bangladesh’s commitment to sheltering and providing aid to forcibly displaced persons from Myanmar.

The Bangladeshi Prime Minister thanked India for providing humanitarian assistance to Bangladesh since September 2017 for the needs of the displaced persons.
