New Delhi: IAS officer Girish Chandra Murmu has been appointed the first Lieutenant-Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, a statement from President Ram Nath Kovind’s office said on Friday.

Murmu, a 1985-batch Gujarat cadre officer who hails from Odisha, is serving as the Expenditure Secretary in the Union Finance Ministry and was the principal secretary to Narendra Modi during his tenure as Gujarat chief minister.

Radha Krishna Mathur has been named as the Lieutenant-Governor of Ladakh, which will formally come into existence as Union Territory on October 31. Mathur is a retired 1977-batch IAS officer of Tripura Cadre. He later retired as the Chief Information Commissioner of India (CIC) in November 2018.

Satya Pal Malik, who was appointed Jammu and Kashmir Governor in August 2018, has been shifted as Governor of Goa.

Jammu and Kashmir was divided into two Union Territories- Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh after the BJP-led Central Government revoked the special status enjoyed by the state. The reorganisation act will come into effect on October 31.

The swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Governors is also expected to take place on October 31.
