New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India, today, said that new laws must be in place to administer the Sabarimala Temple. The court was responding to the plea submitted by the royal family of Pandalam. The apex court has demanded that the government must respond today itself on the issue.
The court also ordered the Kerala government to frame a law by the third week of January, 2020.
The statement was made by the Supreme Court bench led by Justice N. P. Ramana. The bench also observed that yearly around 50 lakh devotees come for pilgrimage to the holy shrine and asked the government how it can compare it with other temples.
The apex court asked what blocks the government from brining a new law exclusive to Sabarimala.
Senior advocate Jayadeep Gupta is appearing for the government. However, the court asked where Jayadeep Gupta was at the time. The apex court demanded that the counsel be present today and that the court will consider the plea later today.
The Panadalam royal family questioned the Travancore Devaswom Board’s (TDB) decision to set up a governing board to control all the temples coming under the TDB. The royal family filed a plea at the High Court in response to TDB’s decision.
