Washington D.C. : The United Nations on Tuesday refused to comment on India’s Citizenship Amendment Bill after it passed in the Lok Sabha.
Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, “As far as I am aware, this legislation will go through a legislative process. We do not have a comment while the domestic legislative process is being carried out.”
“At the same time, our concerns are only of being sure that all governments peruse non-discriminatory laws,” Haq added.
The Lok Sabha after a long hour discussion passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 early morning on Tuesday . The Bill seeks to grant Indian Citizenship to persons belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who have migrated to India after facing persecution on grounds of religion in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, if they fulfill conditions for grant of citizenship.
