Kochi: The advice of Congress leader and former Environment Minister, Jairam Ramesh, to fight against global warming is to become vegetarian. In addition, he said that the beef industry contributes to global warming.

Jairam Ramesh was speaking at the Krithi International book fair when he made these statements. He was attending a discussion on the ecosystem of the Western Ghats. Incidentally, the book fair is organized by a society controlled by the state government.

The Congress leader said, “I know that the beef curry is a very important element in Kerala’s diet but there is no doubt in my mind that the carbon footprint of a non-vegetarian diet is greater than the carbon footprint of a vegetarian diet

He added, I have always held this view that if you want to do something on global warming, become a vegetarian,”

Jairam Ramesh explained that in countries like Argentina, Brazil and the US cut down forests to make room to rear cattle, which emit methane gas which is more powerful greenhouse gas and harms climate.

Ramesh also said that most of the environmental movements in India were led by women. He said that the Chipko movement was entirely led by women and also the Bishnoi community’s struggle to protect trees and environment had a large role for women.
