Kochi: The High Court of Kerala ordered that all those acquitted in the deaths of dalit minor sisters in Walayar must be arrested. The case pertains to the deaths of two minor dalit sisters at Walayar in 2017. The sisters were sexually molested before their deaths. While the elder sister aged 13 was found hanging at her home in, the younger sister aged 9 was found dead in similar circumstances 52 days later.

The High Court said that the arrest is to prevent the chances of the accused leaving the country if they are found guilty during the re-investigation.

The trial court had acquitted M. Madhu, Shibu, and V Madhu, who were accused in the case. There were widespread protests against the trial court’s verdict and allegations of foul play and tie up between the police and prosecution to let the culprits free. The accused is a member of the CPI(M).

Even the POSCO court which acquitted the accused lambasted the investigation team for failing to provide scientific evidence in the case.

After public outcry the government decided to reopen the case and admitted that the police failed to do a proper investigation. The government also removed the public prosecutor who was allegedly colliding with the police to let the culprits free.
