Thiruvananthapuram: The main accused in the Thiruvananthapuram diplomatic baggage gold smuggling case, Swapna Suresh and Sandeep Nair was arrested by NIA on Friday night from Bengaluru.
Ever since the smuggling racket became headlines, they were on the run. NIA will bring them to Kochi office today.
The development comes just a day after NIA took over the case for investigation. Swapna and Sandeep were absconding for the last eight days and the Customs were hunting for them. However it was in vain.
Swapna fled to Bengaluru and was staying with her family. Sandeep Nair had also joined her to stay with them.
The NIA was smart enough to keep tracing her mobile phone records that helped the probe team trace the location of the two. The probe team claims that only after three days of seizing gold, Swapna and Sandeep ran away from Kerala.
According to reports, NIA will investigate whether both of them have any links with terrorism. The NIA will also probe into the source of money and gold and to whom they were planning to hand over the gold.
