Yangoon [Myanmar]: Possibility of a military coup in Burma strengthens as all prominent leaders and activists have been detained by the Army. Reports are coming in about the detention of Myanmar’s governing National League for Democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Syu Kyi was detained in an early morning raid. All lines of communications have been cut off. One year of State of Emergency was announced by the Military through military channel on Tuesday. Former Vice President U Myint Swe has been appointed as the acting President and the authority has been transferred to military Commander-in-Chief.

Reportedly, the coup was following the allegations of electoral fraud in November’s election. Several international authorities including UN General Assembly President Volkan Bozkir and Indian Ministry of External Affairs expressed their deep concerns over the incidents in Myanmar and demanded for the immediate release of the detained leaders.

“We have noted the developments in Myanmar with deep concern. India has always been steadfast in its support to the process of democratic transition in Myanmar. We believe that the rule of law and the democratic process must be upheld. We are monitoring the situation closely”, reacted the Ministry of External affairs. Following this came the reaction of UN GA President. Bozkir took down to twitter to demand the immediate release of the leaders. “I am deeply concerned about developments in Myanmar. I call for immediate release of detained political leaders. Attempts to undermine democracy & rule of law are unacceptable. Military leaders must adhere to democratic norms and respect public institutions &civilian authority”, tweeted the President of General Assembly.
