As there has been an increasing number of vehicles on the roads and people venturing out in large numbers despite implementation of total lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID, the Chennai city police started tightening the grip from today and launched a massive crackdown on the violators.

In a bid to curb the unwarranted movement of people, police have made e-registration mandatory for people to move from one police district to the other within the city.

On the orders of City Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal, the city police has made arrangements to tighten restrictions further by setting up vehicle check posts on the borders in 13 of the 12 police districts in the city.

At the arterial Anna Salai, police stopped vehicles and conducted checks. The vehicles of those found travelling without valid reason were impounded and fines were also imposed.

Barricades were erected on arterial and important roads at sector wise in every police station to prevent people from moving to other sector to buy vegetables and groceries.

Police sources said a total of 153 vehicle check posts have been set up connecting all important junctions and covering all police limits.

More than 200 two-wheeler patrolling vehicles, 309 four wheeler patrolling vehicles and beat patrolling vehicles of police stations were doing rounds across the city at important points and in each police station limits.

People will not be allowed to move without e-registration except on emergency purpose or any other unavoidable circumstances, the sources said.
