Amid widespread protests by the doctor’s fraternity, Assam police today arrested 24 persons allegedly involved in the brutal assault on an on-duty doctor of COVID care centre in Hojai district in Central Assam.

The arrested persons also include a woman, who was seen in the video of an assault on the doctor that went viral on social media.

“Further action till 0400 Hours on June 2nd – 24 persons including main perpetrators & conspirators have been arrested. This includes the woman seen in the video,” informed Special DGP of Assam Police GP Singh.

Mr Singh also said that the police would submit the charge sheet of the case at the earliest and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “24 culprits involved in this barbaric attack have been arrested and the charge sheet will be filed at the earliest. I am personally monitoring this investigation and I promise that justice will be served.”

On Tuesday, an on-duty doctor attached to Fultali Model Hospital under Lanka Police Station in central Assam’s Hojai district was allegedly brutally assaulted by a group of men following the death of a COVID-19 patient at the hospital.

The video showed that the deceased patient mercilessly beat up the doctor, Seuj Kumar Senapati, and also beat up some of the nurses of the hospital on duty at the time.

Meanwhile, the assault on an on-duty doctor has evoked strong condemnation from across the State.

“IMA Assam State Branch condemns in all strongest terms the barbaric assault on a freshly passed out doctor Dr Seuj Kumar Senapati at one of the Covid Care Centres in Hojai District. IMA and all the doctors are at a loss at this gruesome reward to a frontline worker in Covid duty,” Indian Medical Association (IMA) Assam chapter said.

The Assam Police has arrested 24 people in connection with the assault. Of the 24 arrested persons, 22 were identified as Md.Kamaruddin, Md. Jainal uddin, Rehanuddin, Saidul Alam, Rahim uddin, Rajul Islam, Tayebur Rahman, Sahil Islam Rahimuddin, Abdul Kalam, Nurzul Islam, Abdul Gumi, Dilwar Hussain, Abdul Hussain, Anuwar, Nasirrudin, Alimuddin, Jamil Ahmad, Sarifuddin, Safiquddin, Matibur Rahman, Misba Begum.
