No spine to speak against Islamic militancy? Prithviraj, Tovino timidly shared Filmmaker’s letter

Kochi: Malayalam film actors Prithviraj and Tovino yesterday shared Afghanistan Film Director Sahraa Karimi’s letter on Facebook and they have been receiving a big backlash from social media as both the actors didn’t even have the spine to condemn Taliban brutality in Afghanistan in their own words. They didn’t even write a word of their own for innocent people of Afghanistan. Otherwise the noted actors go gaga over any social issue.

Film Director Sahraa Karimi’s letter:

I write to you with a broken heart and a deep hope that you can join me in protecting my beautiful people, especially the filmmakers from the Taliban. In the last few weeks the Taliban have gained control of so many provinces. They have massacred our people, they kidnapped many children, they sold girls as child brides to their men, they murdered a woman for her attire, they gauged the eyes of a woman, they tortured and murdered one of our beloved comedians, they murdered one of our historian poets, they murdered the head of culture for media and government, they have been assassinating people associated with the government, they hung some of our men publicly, they have displaced hundreds of thousands families. The letter goes on.

Prithviraj, a voracious reader, have spoken about many social and political issues earlier too, many times unwanted just to grab some eyeballs. Tovino, an admirer of his senior and a copycat in sharing posts too is no less to grab attention.

But in reality some of these film stars are selective in their outrage. They don’t have any spine to speak truth about horrifying cruelties of Islamic militants. To speak something against Islamic militancy, they wouldn’t dare as it affects their film career in Malayalam and elsewhere. They are bound to appease the fringe Islamic extremists, their supporters outside and some selective groups in the Malayalam cinema.

Malayalam film fraternity, celebrities and leaders in the cultural and literature field who normally raise their voice for the socio-cultural and political issues have a kept a stoic silence regarding Afghanistan. Social media criticizes, it shows  how biased these people are and they care nothing about humanity.
