New Delhi: Today is Kargil Vijay Diwas, 23 years since India’s legendary victory over Pakistan in the Kargil hills.

The battle was begun when the Pakistan army penetrated into the  Indian land. Their intention was to capture significant places like Srinagar-Kargil-Leh highway that connects the disputed areas of Siachen.

India started Operation Vijay to repel the enemy forces that were stationed in the heights of 16,000 to 18,000 feet. Finally Pakistan decided to retreat when they realized the strength and capacity of the Indian army.

The tricolour flag was waved on the heights of Kargil snow hills. The then PM of India A B Vajpayee had declared India’s victory in the Kargil war, started on 1999 May 8, on 1999 July 14. On July 26 he officially declared that the war had ended.

527 Indian soldiers were martyred in the war and as per the Indian records, at least 1200 Pak soldiers had been killed in the attack.

The defeated Pak army had denied their role in the war and tried to blame the terrorists instead. But later, it was proved that the real masterminds behind the attack was the Pak army.

India started celebrating July 26 as Vijay Diwas after the victory in Kargil. Every year, the country revives that memory by paying tributes to the 527 brave soldiers that the nation lost in the Kargil war.
