Thiruvananthapuram: The anti-port protesters have concluded their strike in Vizhinjam after the discussion with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The fishermen’s strike against the Vizhinjam International port led by the Latin Archdiocese, Thiruvananthapuram, has been on for last 140 days.

The latest meeting was held with the CM in Vizhinjam. The Government had made favourable decision towards the protestors over the matter of rent and hence, fishermen’s move to wind up their protest. It was also decided that a monitory committee will be formed which includes Government representatives as well as members from fishermen community. The Government has also promised to provide financial help for the protestors who were unable to go for their work.

Meanwhile, Latin archdiocese vicar general Eugene H Pereira said that they are concluding the strike though not completely satisfied. ” We are taking this as the first phase of the strike. We have sea all around us. We do firmly stand on the things we have expressed. Will continue the research and discussion on the negative impacts of the port construction”, said Fr. Eugene Pereira.
