New Delhi: PT Usha has been officially elected as the President of the Indian Olympic Association. She is the first woman and the first Malayali to head the Indian Olympic Association. Usha was elected unanimously in the election held today under the supervision of former Supreme Court Justice L Nageshwar Rao.
58-year-old PT Usha is currently a Rajya Sabha member. Earlier she also held the observer post of Asian Athletics Federation and Indian Athletics Federation.
PT Usha is the first active sportsperson to hold the post of President of the IOA in its 95-years of history. Yadavendra Singh Maharaja was previously the IOA president from the field of sports. His connection with the world of sports is that he had played Test cricket in 1934.
PT Usha is considered to be the greatest runner India has ever seen. Usha was one of the top ten athletes in world athletics in 1985 and 1986. No one from India has made that graph so high before or after Usha. Usha made her debut at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. In 1982, he won silver medals in the 100m and 200m races at the Asiad held in Delhi. During the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, he ran first in the semi-finals of the 400-meter hurdles, but was changed to the fourth position in a photo finish in the finals.
