Thiruvananthapuram: “The biggest guru dakshina a teacher can get”, said a overjoyed teacher to her favourite student who visited her after 55 years. Chambad, a village in Kannur witnessed emotional scenes on Monday as Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar arrived to meet Ratna Nair, his old Mathematics teacher from Sainik School at Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh .

The second citizen Dhankar and his wife Sudesh Dhankar arrived in ‘Anandam’, the residence of Ratna Nair around 2.30 pm. The teacher was overjoyed to see her pupil after so many years . Vice President Dhankar touched her feet and sought blessings. He introduced his wife Sudesh Dhankar to her.

The teacher and her family welcomed the Vice President with tender coconut water and served him and his wife home-made idlis and banana chips. Vice President Dhankar spent almost an hour at the teacher’s house reminiscing about his school days.

Ratna Nair told the media that she is proud of her student and this has been a great honour for her as a teacher. Although she had taught many students, she remembers Jagdeep, the student with roll no 166 because he was good at studies and extra-curricular activities. She also vividly remembered Dhankhar as “a young boy in khaki, sitting in the first row, fully concentrating on the class”. “Words would not be sufficient to express my joy today. Jagdeep’s visit is the biggest guru dakshina a teacher can get”, Ratna Nair said.

Before leaving the house, Vice President Dhankar spoke to Vishwanathan Nair, brother of Ratna Nair and praised him for taking care of his teacher. He also told him to call in case they need any help.

Vice President Dhankar met his teacher during his two-day Kerala visit. AN Shamseer, the Speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly also accompanied him.

“A proud student pays gratitude to his favorite teacher! The guidance and compassion of a Guru is a compass that steers the trajectory of one’s life. Immensely grateful to have met my teacher, Ms Ratna Nair, from my days at Sainik School, Chittorgarh at her residence in Kerala today. Humbled by her affection and blessings”, tweeted Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar after the visit.
