Ravi Sinha IPS appointed as new chief of India’s external intelligence agency R&AW

New Delhi: The Central government on Monday appointed senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Ravi Sinha as the new Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) chief. The tenure is for two years.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the appointment of Sinha, a 1988 batch Chattisgarh cadre IPS officer as the new R&AW chief, said the Ministry of Personnel order.

Ravi Sinha is currently posted as Special Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat. He will succeed Samant Kumar Goel, the outgoing chief, on his completion of tenure on June 30. Ravi Sinha will head the intelligence agency for two years from the date of joining the post or until further orders.

Samant Kumar Goel had taken the reins of R&AW in June 2019 from the then incumbent, Anil Dhasmana.

The R&AW is the foreign intelligence agency of India and its primary duty is gathering foreign intelligence, counter terrorism, counter-proliferation, advising politicians and advancing India’s foreign strategic interests. It is also charged with the security of India’s nuclear program.

The head of R&AW is designated as Secretary (Research) in the Cabinet Secretariat and is under the authority of Prime Minister. The Chief of R&AW do not come under the parliamentary oversight.
