Stray dogs taking over streets; 7 deaths of rabies in six months; state government and local bodies are neglecting the stray dog issue

Despite numerous incidents of stray dog attacks, including fatalities such as that of 11 year old Nihal, the government and local institutions have persistently neglected the issue.

Reports indicate that over the span of six months, more than 1.5 lakh individuals, including children, have been bitten by dogs, resulting in seven deaths due to rabies.

Disturbingly, over 10 lakh people have suffered dog bites over the course of six and a half years, with hospitals suggesting that these official figures represent only a fraction of the actual incidents.

Allegations have been raised against the government and local bodies in Kerala, accusing them of failing to take necessary measures to address the stray dog problem, despite the recent tragic death of Nihal, an 11-year-old differently-abled boy mauled by stray dogs in Kannur.

While authorities have announced several initiatives, there has been a lack of implementation.

The number of reports from victims continues to rise, with 1.35 lakhs cases in 2017 escalating to 2.5 lakhs in 2022. The recent data regarding individuals seeking treatment for dog bites within the last month further highlights the severity of the issue.

The government is facing increasing scrutiny regarding their actions, or lack thereof, in resolving the escalating stray dog problem. Many are questioning the measures taken to address this issue, which continues to worsen day by day.

As per the report, those who have sought treatment for dog bites within the last month are as follows:
