Thiruvananthapuram: It is raining cats and dogs in Kerala. Three people lost their lives. While a tribal woman died after a coconut tree fell in Vadakancherry Palakkad, a student hailing from Arippalam Thrissur, drowned after he slipped and fell in a canal. A migrant worker who had gone missing from Thottapalli was found dead. Karakutty Kodiyathur native CK Hussain Kutty is reported missing after being swept away by the water current of kozhikode’s Iruvazhinjipuzha.
The Central Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains in 12 districts of Kerala today. Heavy rains are likely to hit the districts from Pathanamthitta to Kasaragod. Central Meteorological Department has also issued a yellow alert warning for Kollam district. The warning also states that the rains in the state will intensify tomorrow.
Rainfall is gaining strength in Central Kerala and North Kerala. The revenue department has given special instructions to the district administrations to evaluate the situation and properly coordinate the relief activities.
The ministerial meeting to be held today will discuss the rain situation in the state. Cabinet meeting will assess the situation.The advice to deal with the rains has already been handed over to the respective district collectors. District Collectors were instructed to take action in case of emergency. The government is putting forward the suggestion that there is no need to worry and that the warnings should be strictly followed. 7 units of NDRF teams have been deployed in seven districts of the state as part of emergency measures in the event of severe rains. Although there is no risk of flooding, the public is advised to remain cautious and alert.
Ban on fishing continues in Kerala, Lakshadweep and Karnataka coasts. Strong wind are likely to lash at a speed of 40 to 55 km per hour. The State Disaster Management Authority has warned people living in coastal and hilly areas to remain vigilant and move to safe places. Night travel ban continues in districts including Thiruvananthapuram and Idukki. Kochi, Ponnani and Kozhikode experienced rough seas. Houses were flooded in many places. As the water level rose in Pampa and Manimalayar, the causeways were submerged. Night travel has been banned in the hilly areas of Kannur and Idukki.
Rain is expected to continue in the state for the next five days. 10 districts except Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam are on orange alert tomorrow. A yellow alert has also been announced in Kollam tomorrow. Educational institutions including professional colleges in Kannur, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki and Kottayam districts will be closed today. Holidays have been declared for educational institutions except professional colleges in Kasaragod district. Those in hilly areas and coastal residents should exercise extreme caution during these days. Fishermen should not venture into sea. The intensity of rain is likely to decrease at many places by tomorrow.
