Lucknow: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) are convening an online meeting of its members to discuss the draft made over the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 am today and the members will be attending it virtually.

The Secretary of the Law Commission of India had earlier asked the AIMPLB to submit a proper response soliciting views and ideas from the public at large regarding UCC.

The Secretary General of AIMPLB responded to this by saying that the issue was examined earlier and the commissioner’s predecessor reached a conclusion that UCC is ‘neither necessary nor desirable’.

Previously, the AIMPLB had passed a resolution at its executive meeting saying that the implementation of a UCC was not possible as it would be an ‘unnecessary’ Act.

It added that the Places of Worship Act 1991 should be “maintained and well-implemented” and religious conversion was a matter of “Freedom of religion”.

AIMPLB is a non-governmental organization in India that represents the interests of Muslims in matters of personal law. The organization focuses on defend the Sharia laws from any other laws or legislation that the AIMPLB thinks will infringe on the religious Sharia laws.

The organization had objected to Right of Children for Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, saying it will hamper the madrasa education system. It had also opposed the Child Marriage Restraint Act.
